![]() ![]() So that could communicate a message to children that it is ok to disobey your parents, although Hanks does reprimand his son with love, patience and honesty for it, making him a good role model and father. But he also has a bad role model quality by flying off to New York City by himself against his dads wishes and without even letting his dad know. He is good as he is constantly looking out for his dad's best interest, after all that is really what sets the whole story in motion to begin with. Additionally Hanks' son shows some signs of being a good and bad role model. On the reverse side however this movie has two of the most likeable characters in a romantic movie and even though the ending may be predictable it is exactly what we are rooting for. I only counted one g-n" and two "s-s" which is totally acceptable for the PG rating but more of the talks of sex and implied pre-marital sex make this inappropriate for anyone under 12. Even though they are both fully clothed, this movie sends a message that it is ok to sleep with your significant other before marriage. There is also mention of an orgasm in an excerpt from a radio program, and although there is no sexual intercourse Meg Ryan and her fiancee played by Bill Pullman are seen in bed together. ![]() Hanks later remarks how he got "laid 7 or 8 times in college" unaware his son has walked in the room and can hear what he said. Additionally Hanks' son calls a woman he is dating a "ho" and although it is rather innocently said he repeats the phrase a few times and later on Meg Ryan's character makes the same comment. There is some talk about sex including Tom Hanks' son asking him if he wants a wife to have sex with her and will she "scratch his back." When Hanks asks his son where he heard it, he mentioned one of his friends had cable, and that is where he picked it up from. Sure, there are many romantic comedies out there with far more risque content than this, but if you are thinking of this for a family movie night either watch it with a filter or without a filter only if you have kids 12 and up. However with that being said there are some iffy things in this movie that almost come close to pushing the limits of the PG rating. If you happen to be female, this is DEFINITELY worth watching.Re-watched this the other night for the first time in years and it was my girlfriend's first time seeing it. Overall, if you're in for a feel good romance, you should see this. Instead, the movie takes a more simplistic approach, and it succeeds-it feels much more natural than the alternative. You could have had a big, romantic, tear-jerking moment. The ending scene in particular is handled very carefully. ![]() The movie's plot starts to stretch plausibility at the end, but not to the point where it destroys the entire film. He does not fail here-you feel for him especially during the sequences where he starts remembering his late wife. He always has a knack for easily slipping into the roles he's given and making them really convincing. Tom Hanks really shines here as someone who has lost the most important person in his life and is trying to rebuild again. Most movies fall into this trap-Someone is about to marry someone who is horrible and find that someone else is better, the viewer supposedly not feeling bad because the fiance was a jerk anyway. What I particularly liked is that the fiance was not portrayed as someone who Meg would do well to leave. She is very believable and actually does care about the feelings of her fiance. Meg Ryan does not have the "evil woman" syndrome that popped up in later 90's chick flicks (The most notorious of which was "My Best Friend's Wedding"). I have to disagree with an earlier comment that this film is unfair to guys-the way the characters are portrayed, I'd have to say that in the reverse situation, I'd still feel the same way. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have great chemistry together, and they both do what they're good at-Tom Hanks portraying the Everyman, and Meg Ryan being cute and innocent. That said, it's a high-end chick flick, which probably a few guys might enjoy, unless they happen to be the exploding helicopter type^^ This movie feels more like a modern day adaptation of the classic romance "An Affair To Remember," and it keeps referencing it too (In fact, the Cary Grant classic is very integral to the plot). I won't lie to you-this movie is a CHICK FLICK! Though I never saw it with a guy, it is definitely a chick flick. ![]()
